Homework

The remaider of this course will mostly involve writing proofs, such as Problems 7 and 8 on Exam 1 as well as the Exercises in the Group Work on congruences. The level of proofs will be getting more difficult.
3.1 Th 10/22 (11:59pm) Exercise Set 07. A LaTeX file and the corresponding PDF file.
This Exercise Set consists of variants of: 3.1.1c ; 3.1.3h ; 3.1.6b .
3.1 Fri 10/30 (11:59pm) Exercise Set 08. A LaTeX file and the corresponding PDF file.
This Exercise Set consists of variants of: 3.1.9b ; 3.1.16c ; 3.1.21a .
3.2 Tue 11/10 (11:00pm) Exercise Set 09. A LaTeX file and the corresponding PDF file. Note due time is 11pm.
This Exercise Set consists of variants of: 3.2.1d ; 3.2.5 ; 3.2.7 ; 3.2.16 .
3.3/4 Fri 11/13 (11:00pm) Exercise Set 10. A LaTeX file and the corresponding PDF file. Note due time is 11pm.
This Exercise Set consists of variants of: 3.3.6a ; 3.3.6c ; 3.3.8 ; 3.4.5a .
3.5 Sun 11/15 (2:00pm) Exercise Set 11. A LaTeX file and the corresponding PDF file.
Study Help For Exam Two Not to hand in First, read §3.6, which is the Ch. 3 summary. This will help your recall the important concepts of Ch. 3.

§3.6 is called appropriately Review of Proof Methods. In each section of Ch. 3, you learned some methods of proofs. Now the book throws a whole bunch of exercises at are you and asks you to proof them (but does not indicate which Proof Method to use). So you have to choice which method to use and then execute the method properly. Sometimes several methods work but a certain method is much easier than the other methods. Sometimes only one method is do-able given what you know thus far in you math career.

§3.6 is a excellent source of exam problems. You should be able to do the following problems when you walk into Exam 2 (and also be able to write each one symbolically but you do not have to hand them in as of now):
3.6.1 (see hint below) ; 3.6.3 ; 3.6.4 ; 3.6.5 ; 3.6.7 (see hint below) ; 3.6.12 .
Hint on 3.6.1. Symbolically looks like (∀ x∈ ℝ) (∀ y∈ ℝ) [ P(x,y) ⇒ Q(x,y) ] where P(x,y) and Q(x,y) are open sentences (they will be inequalities here) in variables x and y.
Hint on 3.6.7. Try proof by contradiction. So assume there exists n∈ ℕ that is a solution. Then use with book's hint to help you factor n3 + 13.

3.1 Tue 9/29 (11:00am) Study Guide Homework for this section. Instructions. So read the section and then do in order:
(A) Screen Casts, then (B) Focus Questions, and then (C) Exercises.
3.2 Tue 10/15 (11:00am) Study Guide Homework for this section. Instructions. So read the section and then do in order:
(A) Screen Casts, then (B) Focus Questions, and then (C) Exercises.
3.1 Sun 10/18 (11:59pm) Instructions are on: Group Work on congruences. On a AWW board, you can
  1. put your thinking land on some pages
  2. then for your formal proof, add the new page (using the icon in the lower left corner)
  3. then upload your proof on the new page as a PDF or jpeg file (using, from the left options choices, the last icon (i.e., a big plus sign)).
To help out making a pdf file of your proof: a tex file and the corresponding pdf file.

Hand in your group's work on your group's AWW board (so nothing to hand in on Blackboard but your grade will be posted on Blackboard).

3.3 Th 10/22 (11:00am) Study Guide Homework for this section. Instructions. So read the section and then do in order:
(A) Screen Casts, then (B) Focus Questions, and then (C) Exercises.
Writing Guideline 15: Write a first draft of your proof and then revise it.
It is highly suggested that you have a rough draft of Exercise Set 7 written before class on Tue. 10/20, when we will go over your AWW board. This way you can ask general questions you encounter when you are trying to write a proof.
3.4 Mon 11/9 (10:00pm) Study Guide Homework for this section. Instructions. So read the section and then do in order:
(A) Screen Casts, then (B) Focus Questions, and then (C) Exercises.
3.5 Not to hand in Study Guide Homework for this section. Instructions. So read the section and then do in order:
(A) Screen Casts, then (B) Focus Questions, and then (C) Exercises
3.6 Not to hand in Study Guide Homework for this section. Instructions. So read the section and then do in order:
(A) there are no Screen Casts, then (B) Focus Questions, and then (C) Exercises.
