Suggestions on How to Study for
Exam 1

  1. The date of Exam 1 is posted on the course homepage (under Class Game Plan). It covers sections: 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, and 8.8. The test is a mix of: fill-in-the-blanks, working problems by hand (showing ALL your work), multiple choice, true/false, and short answers.
  2. Hint (warning)
The first problem, Problem 0, will test the basics, much of which is on Integration Basics Handout (the blue sheet).
You might have had troubles with this the first day of class. But now, thanks to all the homework you have done, it should be easy points.
If you do not make at least a 50% on this part of the exam (of filling in blanks), then your score on the whole exam is what you got on this part. There really is no need to look further through your paper.
Make sure you can do: Then practice by doing (without notes/books) the first problem from any Exam 1 since 2006 from my Previous Exams (for 14S, omit the last 5).
  3. Calculators are not allowed (nor needed) on exams.
  4. During class, cell phones are to be turned off and stored in a closed (e.g., zipped or buttoned) bag (e.g., backpack or purse). Cell phones may not be stored in the person's clothing (e.g., jacket pocket). At the request of a student, I will project my watch up onto the overhead screen.
  5. Of course, you have already finished all the homework for the sections covered by this exam.
  6. Of course, you also have been working several integrals a day from the 81 integrals and the 100 integrals handouts, which are posted (along with solutions) on the Ch 8 Homework page under Review of 8.1-8.5.
  7. Work through the MML review homework(s).
  8. Work through one of my previous exams, which are posted (along with solutions) on the course homepage.
When working through my previous exams, do so
    • without your notes/books/etc.
    • in 75 minutes (the amount of time you will have for the exam).
After working an exam, you should know how you stand on the various concepts. For the topics you need more work on, practice more problems of this type.
    • The textbook has more (i.e., not assigned on MML) problem with solutions in the back of the book.
    • The Ch 8 homework page has additional problems (from other textbooks) to practice (with solutions!)
    • MML has the nice feature where you can go to (on the LHS toolbar) "To Review Homework" and practice problems (without changing your grade).
  9. Next go work through some more of my previous exams. I suggest working through the following.
    (F=Fall and S=Spring).
    1. For Ch 8: Integration. (§ 8.1-8.5, 8.8).
      • 18F: Exam 1 (all)
      • 18S: Exam 1 (all)
      • 17F: Exam 1 (all)
      • 17S: Exam 1 (all)
      • 16F: Exam 1 (all) and also Exam 2 just numbers 2,3,4
      • 16S: Exam 1 (omit 13)
      • 15F: Exam 1 (omit 8)
      • 14S: Exam 1 (omit 10 and the last 5 of Problem 0)
      • 13S: Exam 1 (omit 4 & 11)
      • 12F: the Ch 7 practice exam listed under the Final Exam (whole thing)
      • 12F: Exam 1 (omit 8)
      • 11F: in-class part (whole thing)
      • 10S: Exam 1 - in-class part (whole thing)
  10. If you are still having troubles with integrals, get out the 81 Integrals & 100 Integrals handouts and start integrating.
  11. Come to the exam well rested.
