Instructions for
Exercise Homework
(ER HW)

▶  Exercise (ER) Instructions

  1. For homework due on a given day,
do the homework problems in the order they are listed on the course Homework page.
  2. Do your homework on one side of a piece of paper. Do not do write your homework back-to-back.
Homework written on back side will NOT be graded and will receive a zero!
  3. Use 8.5''x11'' paper that is either lined or blank and is either white or yellow. (No frizzy edges please).
  4. Use complete sentences   (unless otherwise indicated).
  5. ER's HW is graded not only on correctness but also your explanation of how you arrived at the answer so, when necessary, explain your answer. E.g., if the answer is "Yes" or "No", you need to say why your choose your answer.
  6. Once finished with the HW due for a given day, see Instructions: How to turn in a collection of Progress Checks.
You may collaborate (e.g., bounce ideas off each other) but the work you turn in must be your own (i.e., no copying from each other or the web). Remember, you must take your exams alone and cheating, of any form, is grounds for an F in this course.

▶  Often you will be given a Variant of an ER. Variants are given for several reasons, such as the reasons listed below.

  • It is a great ER but the book has a star next to the ER and so there is the answer in the back of the book.
→ TIP: when given a variant, look through the book's ER's for similar questions.
  • The variants contains hints not in the book.
  • The book's ER only has one part but the variant has several parts. The additional parts in the variant are really hints on the main part. So the variant is helping to walk you through the ER.
  • The variant contains comments on how the problem fits into our class lectures.
Do the variant posted on the course homework page and do not do the statement of the ER in the book.

▶  A typical ER is numbered ER x.y.z.

  • The x is the chapter number.
  • The y is the section number.
  • The z exercise number in the book.
If z ≥ 50, then the exercise is not in the book (all sections in the book have less than 50 exercises).
