Latex Lessons
Homework

This homework introduces you to creating homework solutions using Latex with Overleaf.

  1. On the course homepage (in the LaTex box) read the Getting Started and Latex Lessons. These two links walk you through the (free) technology needed for this homework. If you have not already, read these two sites.
Then as explained in Getting Started, in your Overleaf account do the following.
  1. If you have not already, create an Overleaf account.
  2. Create a blank project called "Latex Lessons".
  3. In your new "Latex Lessons" project, download and then (re)compile the "LaTex" file (not the PDF files) for each of the Latex Lessons at Latex Lessons.
  4. Actively read each lesson and recall if you want to see how something is done in Latex, in Overleaf's PDF file (in 3rd column) you can go to the place where it is and double click on the PDF file (magic time) and then in the Latex file (in 2nd column) the corresponding place will be highlighted (usually off by at most one line).
  5. In the Latex Lesson on how to write a proof (Lesson 4), currently the last paragraph is one sentence. Change the last paragraph by adding the second sentence: All Done. This new sentence should be between the first sentence and the square. Don't forget to recompile.
  6. Take a (one is enough) screenshot of your Overleaf window that shows you successfully downloaded each of the lessons and have recompiled the lessons. It suffices to have one screenshot of your Overleaf Latex Lesson project which shows: each of the lessons listed in the first column, one of the lessons showing in the middle column, and that lesson complied in the last column.
  7. Download your new Latex Lesson 4 (with the one added sentence) to your computer.
Then on Blackboard download (two files are sufficient)
  1. the screenshot of your Overleaf project    (this indicates that you can get files into Overleaf and compile them)
  2. the PDF file of your adjusted (with the one added sentence) Latex Lesson 4 (indicating you can Latex and can get PDF files from Overleaf to Bb).

This homework might take take longer to do than one thinks at first glance. If you are having trouble, then please post your question on Piazza (to everyone, not just to Prof.) and be sure to include which operating system you are using (e.g.: Apple macOS, Microsoft Windows, Google's Android OS, Apple iOS, or Linux Ubuntu). Posting a question/note over Piazza gets it to me as fast as emailing me the question; however, posting it on Piazza has the advantage that the answer provided might help another student. It would be wonderful if the entire class helps each other out and answers the questions. So please feel free to answer any question/note (or just start a thread/discussion) under the question/note. Prof. G uses Linux (Ubuntu) and can handle Linux questions.
