Ewa's Obituary
Services for Dr. Ewa Wojcicka of Mount Pleasant South Carolina will
be held at 11:00 AM Thursday January 18 at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church.
A prayer service will be held Wednesday 7:30 PM at the Caughman-Harman Funeral home
on Old Bush River Road with visitation at 8:00 - 9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Ewa, a Mathematics Professor at the University of Charleston, had been recovering
from a serious automobile accident on December 10 that left her in critical condition.
Ewa fought back heroically from that accident ñ overcoming tremendous odds, she
had made dramatic progress in recent days. She died Sunday evening, January 14,
from complications.
Originally from Gdansk Poland, Ewa came to the United States in 1978 with her mother
Teresa and sister Anna. She received her Ph. D. from the University of South Carolina,
where she was recognized as the outstanding graduate student for 1984. She was the
author of several highly regarded research papers in mathematics in the areas of
Analysis and Combinatorics. In her personal life, she spent much of her time doing
charity work and, in particular, she helped tutor students at Charleston's Florence
Crittenden Home for Unwed Mothers. She was a 5.0 Volvo tennis player and had been
the captain of the University of Gdansk's Championship volleyball team in Poland.
Surviving are her mother Teresa Greaney, sister Anna Gleissner and husband John,
brother Arthur, father Joseph Wojcicki and wife Halina, nieces Helena, Viki and Allie,
nephews Johnny, Lucas, and Jimmy, and her fiancé David Sumner.
