Catalog Description:  Differentiation and integration of algebraic functions.  Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.  Applications.  (No credit given if taken after Math 20A.)

Textbook: Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, second edition, by James Stewart; published by Brooks/Cole; 2001

Subject Material:  We shall cover parts of chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the text.

Calculus Lab:  A lab for Calculus students will be open 10 to 12 hours daily Monday through Friday in APM 2402.  There will usually be at least 2 tutors and/or TAs available to help with homework, calculators, and coursework.  Take a look at the Calculus Lab Schedule to see when it is open or when your favorite tutor or TA is there. We strongly recommend that you make use of the Calculus Lab.

Calculators:  Some instructors may require graphing calculators (preferably a TI-83) in their class; they are recommended in all the classes.  The calculator will be used as an aid in learning concepts, not just as a means of computation.   Help with using TI graphing calculators will be available in the Calculus Lab.  However, please note that no calculators will be allowed during exams or quizzes.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned each Wednesday in lecture and on the course homework page and should be completed by the discussion section the following Tuesday.  Homework will not be collected; your homework will be evaluated by your performance on periodic quizzes.  You should make every effort to complete the homework assignments and seek help with problems you have not been able to solve.  You can get help with the homework assignments in the Calculus Lab (APM 2402).  A Student Solutions Manual (available in the Bookstore) has complete solutions for all of the odd-numbered problems in the text.

Reading:  Reading the sections of the textbook corresponding to the assigned homework exercises is considered part of the homework assignment; you are responsible for material in the assigned reading whether or not it is discussed in the lecture.

Quizzes:  There will be four (4) quizzes given during the Wednesday or Friday lecture; see the course calendar for the specific dates.   Your cumulative quiz grade will be based on the best three (3) of the four (4) quizzes.  There will be no makeup quizzes.  No notes (or books) or calculators will be allowed during the quizzes.

Midterm Exams:  There will be two midterm exams given during the   4th hour  (Thursdays 8:00pm - 8:50pm);  see the course calendar for the specific dates.   There will be no makeup exams.   No calculators will be allowed during the midterm exams; however, you may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to each midterm exam.

Final Exam:  The final examination will be held at the following date and time.

The final examination must be taken at its scheduled time; you are responsible for ensuring that you have no other obligations during the time that the final examination is scheduled. No calculators will be allowed during the final examination; however, you may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to the final examination.

Grading: Your course grade will be based on the maximum of the following two weighted averages.
