Textbook: Thomas' Calculus, fifteenth edition, by Joel Hass, Christopher Heil, Przemyslaw Bogacki, Maurice Weir, published by Pearson, 2022.
Catalog Description: Geometry in the plane and space, Vectors, derivative and intergral in n-Space, Green's Theorem.
Subject Material: We shall cover the following sections in the textbook: 12.1 -- 16.4.
Homework: Online homeworks are assigned at Pearson's Math Lab. (See the instruction to register for this Math 241 Vector Calculus course at Pearson's Math Lab.) Homeworks are assigned by sections. They are usually assigned at Thursday's midnight and due next Thursday at 11:00pm. Each homowork will be rescaled to 5 points at the end of semester. We will keep the best 30 homework scores (out of 34 sections) so that the total sum of homeworks worth 150 points.
Reading: Reading the sections of the textbook corresponding to the assigned homework exercises is considered part of the homework assignment; you are responsible for material in the assigned reading whether or not it is discussed in the lecture.
Quizzes: There will be ten (10) quizzes given during the lectures; see the course calendar for the specific dates. Your cumulative quiz grade will be based on the best eight (8) of the ten (10) quizzes. No notes (or books) will be allowed during the quizzes.
Exams: There will be three exams given during lectures after each chapter; see the course calendar for the specific dates. There will be no makeup exams. If you miss one exam, the portion will be replaced by your final exam. You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to each exam. No book or more than one page of notes are allowed during the exam.
Final Exam: The final examination will be held on the date and time scheduled in the Final Examination Schedule. You may bring one 8.5 by 11 inch handwritten sheet of notes with you to the final examination.
Calculator policy: Calculators are prohibited to use in three exams and the final exam. However, you may use them for your homework and quizzes (although not required).
Attendance: (20 points) You are expected to attend all lectures. A grade penalty will be exacted if you have substantial number (>10%) of absences. (whether excused or unexcused); see the Bulletin of Undergraduate Studies.
Cell Phone Policy: All cell phones should be turned off during classes.
Grading: Each homework will be rescaled to 5 points. There are 34 homeworks/sections. Each quiz contributes 10 points. The total scores from 8 (best) quizzes is 80 points. Each exam contributes 100 points. The final exam contributes 200 points. The total score is 600 points. Your course grade will be based on the maximum of the following two weighted percentages.
