The main source will be Xeroxed notes based on the lectures. Supplementing these are:
Required:
Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Linear Algebra
by Seymour Lipschutz.
There will be tests covering undergraduate linear algebra based on assigned reading out of this text.
Optional:
Linear Algebra
by Kenneth Hoffman and Ray Kunze.
This is a standard (and readable) graduate level reference for the subject and is worth having for that reason. However it is not cheap (listing for $75.00 at Amazon.com) and one should be able to do fine in the course without it.
Tests and Grading:
Homework:
Homework will be assigned and collected on a regular basis. Grades on homework are at least as important as grades on tests and the final.
Tests:
There will be two midterms and a final. The dates are
Test 1 Monday, September 27
Test 2 Wednesday, November 17
Final Wednesday, December 8 - 5:30 p.m.
The first test will be graded and handed back before Thursday, September 30 which is last day to withdraw without a grade of "WF" being recorded.
Quizzes on undergraduate material:
It is assumed that persons taking this class have had an undergraduate class in linear algebra and/or matrix theory. There will be short in class quizzes on this undergraduate material on the following dates:
Quiz 1 Wednesday, September 1
Quiz 2 Wednesday, September 15
Quiz 3 Wednesday, September 29
These quizzes will cover roughly the material in Chapters 1-4 of Schaum's Outline. A outline of the material to be covered will be distributed before hand. If the need arises there will me more than three quizzes on this material.
Optional Extra Class Meetings:
For the first several weeks of the term there will be extra class meetings on Friday at 4:00p.m. for students that feel they need help reviewing the undergraduate material that will be covered on the quizzes. Attendance to these extra classes is entirely optional.
