Fruitful
by Malia Griggs, 2002
The unofficial close of summer
Sunset
Disappears behind and beyond the horizon
Enveloping the sky in darkness
Signalling the end
Of long days
As yesterday becomes
A bygone
And life washes on
Into precious dreams,
Soon vanished
Like the sky's livid peach
Farewell.
The once weres of paradise
Are remembered in the crammed spaces of time
That we leave to imagine tomorrow.
We believe that the future
Will never come
But yet here it is
Unwrapped like sheets of thin gold
Blowing kisses good-bye to our memories.
Unruly, we smooth out the carcasses of footsteps
Taking a soft moment to breathe in today as it is
As it stands
As it celebrates
And we bid fond wishes to the summer and this year
Creeping slowly,
Like sun-
Sets-
Rises,
Gone before we know it.
