The picture below is an animated gif file produced with the aid of MAPLE (for making the pictures) and GifBuilder (for combining the pictures into an animated gif file). The graph is of y = x^2, and secant lines are shown. One point of each secant line is located at (1,1) on the graph, and the other point of the secant line on the graph is approaching the point (1,1) from the right. The secant line therefore slowly "becomes" the tangent line to the curve y = x^2 at the point (1,1).
