Abstract
Come hear about several elegant surprising examples of puzzles and games that use elementary mathematics. Learn how they illustrate the important ideas of invariance and evaluation functions.

Prof. Sumner
Since joining the USC math faculty in 1971, Prof. Sumner has won numerous teaching awards, including:
  • SCHC Professor of the Year (1981)
  • SCHC Outstanding Professor in Science and Mathematics (1988)
  • Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award (1988, 1993, 2006)
  • Michael J. Mungo Teaching Award (1999)
  • Amoco Outstanding Teacher Award (2001)
  • Disability Services Two Thumbs Up Award (2001)
  • SCHC Michael Hill Award for Outstanding Teaching (2002)
  • Mathematical Association of America SE Section Teacher of the Year Award (2007).
