Math 572 Mathematical Foundation of Network Science

Prerequisite:  Prerequisite: C or better in Math374 and in one of the courses Math344/Math544.

Catalog Description:   Graphs and probability, Web graphs, random graphs, models for complex graphs, graph seraching algorithms, eigenvalues, PageRank.

Textbook:   Anthony Bonato (2008), A Course on the Web Graph, American Mathematical Society, ISBN: 978-0821844670

Subject Material:   We shall cover chapter 1 to chapter 5 of the text.

Learning Outcome After successful completion of this course, students will be able to remember basic terminologies in graph theory and probability theory; understand the structures of the Web Graph and complex graphs; apply random graph models; evaluate and analyze real network data.

Homework:   Homework will be assigned and collected roughly every other week (except exam weeks) through Blackboard.

Reading:  Reading the sections of the textbook corresponding to the assigned homework exercises is considered part of the homework assignment; you are responsible for material in the assigned reading whether or not it is discussed in the lecture.

Exams:   There will be two midterm open-book exams during lecture time. You may bring books and notes to exams, but no Internet access.

Final project:   There is no final exam for this class. Instead, you will have a final project. Please form a group of three (or two). Each group will write a report of at least 4 pages and make a presentation in the classes.

Attendance:    You are expected to attend all lectures. A grade penalty will be exacted if you have substantial number (>10%) of absences. (If you get sick and have doctor's note, the absences are excused.); see the Bulletin of Undergraduate Studies.

Cell Phone Policy:   All cell phones should be turned off during classes.

Grading: The homework is 30%. The first exam is 20%. The second exam is 20%. The final project is 30%. Your final grade is based on the percentage as follows. Your final grade is based on the percentage as follows.
