Class Notes:
The definition and basic examples of fields.
Determinants over rings and the Smith Normal Form.
The linear algebra questions from the admission to candidacy exams for the last 15 years.
Texts:
The main source will be Xeroxed notes based on the lectures. Supplementing these are:
Required:
Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Linear Algebra
by Seymour Lipschutz.
There will be tests covering undergraduate linear algebra based on assigned reading out of this text.
Optional:
Linear Algebra
by Kenneth Hoffman and Ray Kunze.
This is a standard (and readable) graduate level reference for the subject and is worth having for that reason. However it is not cheap (listing for $98.67 at Amazon.com) and one should be able to do fine in the course without it.
Tests and Grading:
Homework:
Homework will be assigned and collected on a regular basis. Grades on homework are at least as important as grades on tests and the final.
Tests:
There will be two midterms and a final. The dates are
Test 1 Friday, September 27
Test 2 Monday, November 11
Final Saturday, December 14 - 9:00 a.m.
The first test will be graded and handed back before Thursday, September 30 which is last day to withdraw without a grade of "WF" being recorded.
Quizzes on undergraduate material:
It is assumed that persons taking this class have had an undergraduate class in linear algebra and/or matrix theory. There will be short in class quizzes on this undergraduate material on the following dates:
Quiz 1 Wednesday, September 11
Quiz 2 Wednesday, September 18
Quiz 3 Wednesday, September 25
These quizzes will cover roughly the material in Chapters 1-4 of Schaum's Outline. A outline of the material to be covered will be distributed before hand. If the need arises there will me more than three quizzes on this material.
