Contestants delivered original
speeches of 4 to 5 minutes with the title, "If I Could Change the World."
Contestants had to be under age 16 as of January 1, 2002 (Malia was
12 1/2.) Boys and girls compete for separate prizes.
With expert guidance and encouragement from her teacher, Mrs. Sandra Vann,
Malia came in second at the local competition sponsored by the St. Andrews
Optimist Club. That was just good enough to qualify for the Zone
competition, held at the SCETV auditorium, which she won. So she
qualified for the District competition, which meant the whole state.
Going against older girls, she won first place, for which
she was awarded a nice scholarship for college!

" Anniversary cake: .
A green, snake-shaped cake was among the
birthday treats Sunday at the 25th anniversary
of the Riverbanks Zoo. Blowing out the
candles are, from left, Jessie Johnson, Sara
McLeod, Kelsey Swingle, Ashlyn Laws and
Malia Griggs." Malia was there because of placing 3rd in her age
division in the Zoo's Anniversary Coloring Contest.
